Team Puerto Rico celebrates victory. 3rd day of the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship for men, Auckland, New Zealand. 04 July 2009.
AUCKLAND (FIBA U19 World Championship) - As expected, Puerto Rico have defeated Egypt, 99-71, to record their fourth win of the FIBA U19 World Championship, and move into Friday’s quarter finals.
While the Americans had a slow start to the game, leading by just 6 points with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter, their quick open court game soon proved too much for the African champions.
Mike Rosario bounced back from a poor game against the USA to score 22 points in 20 minutes of court time, while Raymond Cintron had his best game of the tournament with 17.
Jio Fontan recorded an impressive double of 9 points and 10 assists, as Puerto Rico handed out 22 assists to 10, and won the rebound count 45 to 34.
For Egypt, Adham Mohamed Elsayed (17 points, 3/6 3pfg) and Amro Sherif Abdelhalim (22 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) put in strong performances, and will be looking to do so again as their team competes for positions 9-12 on Friday and Saturday.
Puerto Rico will not know their final position in Group E until other pool games are completed, but mathematically can finish anywhere from second to fourth. Second or third positions are the most likely.
